ÚUMBAL: NOMADIC CHOREOGRAPHY FOR INHABITANTS/ Creator and Artistic Director

Úumbal is a pilot project of collective choreography inspired by the ways of dancing of various inhabitants of Mexico City, and emerges from the need to exercise new ways of meeting others through dance, and the desire to experience different ways of collectively walking, recognizing and reappropriating the public space; this is why Úumbal’s structure  combines walking and dancing; hence his nomadic condition.

The project was part of the live arts program of the Museo Universitario del Chopo -fundamental accomplice of this collective experience- and it was developed over several months, beginning its first stage in April 2015 when an open call was released for dance enthusiasts of different ages and origins to donate dance steps for the Pasoteca de Úumbal (an imprecise definition of Pasoteca could be a “Step library”) these steps would become the raw material  from which generating our nomadic choreography. In the second stage, known as Laboratorio de Tejedores, we had the participation of volunteers who created, along with the Úumbal’s team, new movement sequences inspired by the donated steps, as well as  proposed ways of walking, staying and coexisting in the public space.

Finally, after auditioning amateur dance volunteers willing to participate in the third stage, the assembly; a group of 60 people between 14 and 60 years old, was completed to move the choreography through three routes: two in the Santa María la Ribera neighborhood and another neighborhood close the museum.

Úumbal proposed walking and dancing together as a political act: an artistic manifestation to defend the collective encounter and enjoyment, to insist on being visible, and not to disappear. In these times and in this country, it continues to be urgent.

Úumbal was selected by the prestigious art magazine La Tempestad, as the best performing arts piece of 2015 in Mexico.

ÚUMBAL: THE PLATFORM

In a second stage, during 2016 and part of 2017 a digital platform is developed where the whole process of construction of this nomadic choreography is shared, providing knowledge, reflections, testimonies and tools, so that it can be partially or totally replicated by any citizen and / or collective eager to meet others, from the dance.
