o. T / INCIPIENT FUTURES

Conocí el trabajo de Ian Kaler en el marco de la Tanzplattform 2016 en Frankfurt, Alemania, al ser invitada por el Instituto Goethe Mexiko como curadora/directora artística representante de México. Durante esta emisión, se presentó junto con el performer Philipp Gehmacher y la productora musical Jam Rostron con la pieza o.T.*  (gateaways to movement). Ian Kaler entiende su trabajo como una práctica física y creativa que aborda críticamente la representación, las normas sociales y la política de las imágenes, a la vez que contribuye a la creación de nuevas ideas y perspectivas dentro y fuera de la danza contemporánea.

El trabajo de Kaler me parecía desafiante por su aproximación única a dinámicas de movimiento y por poder expresar de forma tan clara las pulsiones de movimento interno y externo entre Gehmacher y el coreógrafo, a través de patrones de movimiento que a veces se percibían casi como hipnóticos. La relación de Kaler con el espacio, el movimiento y la música, tenía una cualidad única y fresca, que destacaba en toda la Tanzplattform.

Derivado de este experiencia propuse a este artista como invitado al año dual Alemania-México. Kaler presentó  otra pieza de la serie  o.T. (Incipient Futures) en el Festival Un Desierto para la Danza y el Centro Cultural Tijuana, acompañado del performer africano Stephane Peeps Moun y la baterista Joy Leah Joseph. o. T es una exploración íntima y energética de “muchos futuros posibles” a través  de la manera en que la música y el movimiento integran, alteran y juegan con las (fugaces) uniones y alianzas que se generan en el transcurso de la coreografía, que nos hacen preguntarnos ¿qué nos conmueve como comunidad y  hacia dónde nos dirigimos como individuos y como parte de un colectividad?

I got to know the work of Ian Kaler in the framework of the Tanzplattform 2016 in Frankfurt, Germany, invited by the Goethe Mexiko Institute as curator / artistic director representing Mexico. During this broadcast, he was presented along with the performer Philipp Gehmacher and the musical producer Jam Rostron with the piece T * (gateaways to movement) Ian Kaler understands his work as a physical and creative practice that critically addresses representation, social norms and the politics of images, while contributing to the creation of new ideas and perspectives inside and outside of contemporary dance.

Kaler’s work seemed challenging to me, due to his unique approach to dynamics of movement and to be able to express so clearly the internal and external movement impulses between Gehmacher and the choreographer, through movement patterns that were sometimes perceived almost as hypnotics Kaler’s relationship with space, movement and music had a unique and fresh quality, which stood out throughout the Tanzplattform.

Derived from this experience I proposed this artist as a guest of the Germany-Mexico dual year. Kaler presented another piece of the series o.T. (Incipient Futures) at the A Desert for the dance Festival and the Tijuana Cultural Center,  accompanied by African performer Stephane Peeps Moun and drummer Joy Leah Joseph. o. T. is an intimate and energetic exploration of “many possible futures” through the way music and movement integrate, alter and play with the (fleeting) unions and alliances that are generated in the course of the choreography, which They ask us what moves us as a community and where do we go as individuals and as part of a community?
